Equipment Unlocks

Bandana (Infinite Ammo)

Equipment Unlock

A full no-kill run — tranquilizers, CQC holds, and stealth are all fair game, but nobody dies. The reward is the series' signature infinite-ammo item.

Unlock Condition
Complete the game on any difficulty without killing a single enemy, human or boss.
Rewards
  • Bandana equip item
  • Unlimited ammunition for every weapon while worn

Stealth (Optical Camouflage)

Equipment Unlock

Even harder than the no-kill run: get through the entire game without ever letting a guard raise the alarm on you.

Unlock Condition
Complete the game on any difficulty without triggering a single Alert phase.
Rewards
  • Optical Camo equip item
  • Near-total invisibility while equipped

Weapon Unlocks

Solar Gun

Weapon Unlock

Spare all four members of the Beauty and the Beast Corps instead of killing them, and collect their dolls along the way.

Unlock Condition
Defeat Laughing Octopus, Raging Raven, Crying Wolf, and Screaming Mantis all non-lethally, with the tranquilizer gun.
Rewards
  • Solar Gun
  • A doll collectible for each Beauty and the Beast Corps member spared

Rail Gun

Weapon Unlock

A straightforward reward for finishing Old Snake's story — makes a New Game+ style replay considerably easier against Gekko and armored PMCs.

Unlock Condition
Complete the single-player campaign once, on any difficulty.
Rewards
  • Rail Gun available from the start on subsequent playthroughs

Patriot (Infinite-Ammo Rifle)

Weapon Unlock

Named after the Patriots themselves, this rifle is the top prize for the emblem system's toughest challenge run.

Unlock Condition
Earn the Big Boss emblem — the game's hardest completion emblem, requiring an extremely clean, fast, non-lethal run.
Rewards
  • The Patriot: unlimited ammo, no recoil, no reload

Big Boss Extreme Difficulty

Difficulty Unlock

The hardest difficulty in the game, unlocked automatically once you've beaten the story a first time.

Unlock Condition
Complete the game once, save the clear data, then load that save.

Alternate Camouflage Patterns

Cosmetic Unlock

Dozens of face camo and suit patterns are tied to the emblem system's tiered completion requirements, rewarding progressively stricter stealth runs.

Unlock Condition
Earn various completion emblems (Fox, FOXHOUND, Hound) through fast, low-alert, non-lethal clears — or enter unlock passwords from official promotional material.
Rewards
  • Face paint and OctoCamo patterns based on past Metal Gear protagonists and villains

Endings

Best Ending

Story Ending

Unlike earlier games in the series, MGS4 doesn't branch into dramatically different endings — but it rewards a full, attentive playthrough with one of the series' longest send-offs.

Unlock Condition
Reach the story's end credits — Old Snake's ending is largely fixed, but small choices along the way (Naomi's fate, and how the final fight with Ocelot plays out) color the closing scenes.
