Late July, 1998. On the outskirts of Raccoon City, a string of bizarre murders — bodies found half-eaten — has the police baffled. The elite S.T.A.R.S. unit is called in, and the Bravo team's helicopter is sent to investigate the surrounding Arklay Mountains first. It never checks back in.

The Alpha team, including Jill Valentine, Chris Redfield, Albert Wesker, and Barry Burton, flies out to search for their missing colleagues. They find Bravo's crashed helicopter and evidence of a Bravo member torn apart, and are ambushed by a pack of feral, disfigured dogs. Alpha's own pilot, Brad Vickers, panics and abandons the team on the ground. With the dogs closing in, the survivors flee into the only shelter in sight: a sprawling, isolated mansion.

Once the doors shut behind them, the team splits up to search the building — and starts disappearing one by one. Jill and Chris (whichever one you're playing as) discover the mansion isn't just old and empty: it's infested with zombies, and Umbrella's fingerprints are everywhere. Diaries left behind by researchers and guards describe a program gone catastrophically wrong — a T-Virus, developed as a bioweapon, that escaped containment and turned the mansion's staff and test subjects into the undead.

As you explore, you find surviving Bravo team member Rebecca Chambers, encounter Barry acting strangely evasive, and run into monstrous creations bred specifically to guard the estate — Yawn the giant snake, the carnivorous Plant 42, and the Hunters that appear once you've gathered enough of the mansion's secrets.

The truth surfaces in the mansion's underground laboratory: Wesker was never really S.T.A.R.S. He orchestrated the entire mission on Umbrella's orders, luring the team to the mansion to gather data on the T-Virus's effects — and he's been manipulating Barry the whole time, threatening his family to force his cooperation. Wesker reveals himself and unleashes his prized creation: the Tyrant, a hulking bioweapon grown specifically to kill anyone who gets too close to the truth.

The Tyrant turns on Wesker too, mauling him before the survivors can even process the betrayal.

With the mansion's self-destruct sequence triggered, the survivors — however many made it this far — race to the surface. On the helipad, the Tyrant bursts out for one last fight, mutated further by exposure to the Virus. A well-placed rocket from the launcher Brad drops at the last second finishes it off for good, moments before the mansion is consumed in a fiery blast below.

A helicopter piloted by Brad pulls the survivors out as Umbrella's cover-up begins — the company will spend the next several years trying to bury what happened in the Arklay Mountains, and Raccoon City's reckoning is still to come.
