Secrets
New Game+ rewards (Bandana with infinite ammo, Stealth Camouflage, Tuxedo), alternate endings, and iconic Hideo Kojima fourth-wall tricks.
Meryl's Ending & The Infinite Ammo Bandana
Good Ending / Special ItemIf you survive the torture sessions by rapidly mashing the Circle button, Meryl will survive the activation of Metal Gear REX. Following your escape together on the snowmobile, Meryl rewards Snake with her iconic Bandana.
Equipping the Bandana on New Game+ grants Solid Snake infinite ammunition for every firearm and explosive in the game (including Stinger rockets, Nikita missiles, Grenades, and C-4). Additionally, holding down the FA-MAS fire button until it flashes red fires continuous bursts of high-damage tracer rounds.
Otacon's Ending & Stealth Camouflage
Alternate Ending / InvisibilityIf you submit to the torture, Meryl will perish in the REX hangar, leaving Dr. Hal Emmerich (Otacon) as your escape partner. At the conclusion of the mission, Otacon gifts Snake his prototype Stealth Camouflage device.
Equipping Stealth Camouflage in New Game+ renders Snake completely invisible to standard Genome Soldiers and security cameras. However, storyline bosses, wolf-dogs, and scripted infrared security checkpoints can still detect your presence.
Psycho Mantis Controller Port 2 Trick
Fourth-Wall Easter EggDuring the psychic showdown with Psycho Mantis, the telepath uses his abilities to predict player inputs transmitted through Controller Port 1, rendering him immune to attacks.
Unplugging your controller from Port 1 and inserting it into Port 2 (or remapping player 2 in the Master Collection / emulators) completely confounds Mantis, preventing him from reading Snake's mind and leaving him vulnerable to standard combos. If unable to switch ports, shoot and shatter the two gas-masked statues in the room's upper corners.
Meryl's Secret Codec Frequency on the CD Case
Out-of-Game PuzzleWhen Kenneth Baker instructs Snake to radio Meryl, he mentions her frequency is printed on the "back of the CD package". This was a literal fourth-wall puzzle directing players to look at the back cover of the physical 1998 retail CD jewel case, where an in-game screenshot clearly depicted Snake calling Codec frequency 140.15.
The Camera & Konami Developer Ghosts
Collectible / Retro Photo ModeThe Camera allows Snake to take first-person snapshots stored to the Memory Card. Photographing specific hidden coordinates across Shadow Moses (such as air ducts, desks, and the heliport) reveals spectral apparition portraits of Hideo Kojima, Yoji Shinkawa, and the Konami development team.
Tuxedo & Ninja's Red Exoskeleton
Special Outfits / 3rd PlaythroughUpon starting a third playthrough on a clear save file containing both endings: - Solid Snake will wear an elegant James Bond-style formal Tuxedo throughout the entire infiltration. - Meryl appears in an alternate tactical combat uniform. - The Cyborg Ninja (Frank Jaeger) sports a striking crimson red and gold combat exoskeleton.
