Lore

Old Snake's final mission across four warzones to run down Liquid Ocelot and dismantle the Patriots' AI war system before his body gives out for good.

A War Economy Built on Nanomachines

By 2014, the Patriots' AI system has reshaped modern warfare into a self-sustaining economy. Private military companies (PMCs) fight endless, low-intensity wars around the world, their soldiers armed and directed by SOP — a battlefield network that reads every combatant's nanomachines to manage stress, aim, and identify-friend-or-foe in real time. War itself has become an industry with its own supply chains, and Liquid Ocelot — Revolver Ocelot's body, hijacked by a grafted arm carrying Liquid Snake's mind and, later, will — is making a play to seize control of SOP for himself.

Old Snake's Last Mission

Solid Snake, genetically accelerated to age roughly four times faster than normal, is now a dying old man in his forties, his body failing under a mutated strain of FOXDIE that's slowly killing him along with anyone infected alongside him. Roy Campbell and Naomi Hunter ask him for one final favor: hunt down Liquid Ocelot before he can turn SOP against the world. Guided by Otacon and Naomi over codec, and aided by the black-market arms dealer Drebin (whose Mk. II/III support robots track Snake's Sneaking Suit and OctoCamo remotely), Snake follows Liquid's trail through a Middle Eastern warzone, where he first lays eyes on his target and on Rat Patrol 01, a resistance militia led by an old friend under a new face.

South America and the B&B Corps

In South America, Snake meets Big Mama, an aging revolutionary who turns out to be a long-lost face from his own past, and runs headlong into the Beauty and the Beast Corps — four female soldiers, each so psychologically shattered by war that their exoskeletal battlesuits have fused permanently to their bodies. Laughing Octopus is the first to fall. Deeper in, Snake finds Naomi captured by Vamp, the nigh-unkillable assassin from the Big Shell incident, now working for Liquid.

Europe and the Truth About EVA

In Eastern Europe, Snake works with the local resistance to track SOP's command structure through a PMC-occupied city, then rides shotgun with Big Mama through a running battle against Raging Raven and her flock of remote-piloted Ravens. It's here that Big Mama's real identity comes into focus: she is EVA, the double agent who once helped Naked Snake and later raised Liquid and Solidus as her own — carrying secrets about the Patriots, the Philosophers' Legacy, and Snake's own creation that reach all the way back to the Cold War.

Shadow Moses, Twice Over

Snake's final approach to the Patriots' AI core runs straight through Shadow Moses Island, the nuclear disposal facility where the original Metal Gear incident took place a decade earlier. After a snowbound trek and a fight against Crying Wolf, Snake reunites with Raiden, now barely more than a cyborg wrapped around a dying body, and together they hold off waves of self-destructing Gekko while Naomi injects Snake with a serum to finally end Vamp for good. Liquid Ocelot arrives piloting the original Metal Gear REX, and Snake — with help from Otacon's own newly rebuilt Metal Gear MK. III — battles him to a standstill.

Old Sun

The trail ends aboard Outer Haven, Liquid's flagship: an unmanned battleship designed to broadcast a corrupted, weaponized version of SOP to every PMC on Earth, seizing control of every soldier's nanomachines at once. Snake fights through the last of the B&B Corps — Screaming Mantis, controlling Meryl's body — and finally corners Liquid Ocelot in the ship's core. There, the truth comes out in full: Ocelot had been playing Liquid's persona and the Patriots' own AIs against each other for years, using self-hypnosis to fool even the nanomachine-based lie detection built into SOP, all to drag the Patriots — and the war economy they built — down with him. What's left is a final, wordless fistfight between two old soldiers, settled the way their story always meant to settle it, before Snake walks away to spend whatever time he has left on his own terms.
