Lore

Claire and Chris Redfield's struggle against the Ashford dynasty, Albert Wesker, and the T-Veronica Virus.

Paris Infiltration and the Siege of Rockfort Island

December 1998 — three months following the atomic destruction of Raccoon City. Claire Redfield continues her relentless search for her missing brother, Chris. After infiltrating Umbrella's European headquarters in Paris, she is captured by corporate security and transferred as a high-value prisoner to Rockfort Island, a remote military fortress and prison compound commanded by the eccentric Ashford dynasty.

Shortly after her incarceration, the island is bombed in a covert aerial raid orchestrated by Albert Wesker and his private paramilitary unit H.C.F., seeking to steal the T-Veronica Virus. The assault causes widespread structural destruction and leaks the T-Virus among prison guards and inmates. Claire is freed from her cell by the critically wounded guard Rodrigo Juan Raval, who gives her his lighter. Navigating the burning ruins, Claire joins forces with fellow teenage inmate Steve Burnside, while dodging attacks from the base's unhinged commander, Alfred Ashford.

The Ashford Secret and Escape to Antarctica

Claire and Steve uncover that Alfred and his absent twin sister, Alexia Ashford, are the heirs to one of Umbrella's three founding aristocratic families. While exploring the private manor and the eerie replica of the Spencer Mansion built on the island, Claire unearths a disturbing revelation: Alexia is nowhere to be found. Alfred suffers from severe dissociative identity disorder, cross-dressing in his sister's gown and mimicking her voice to preserve the delusion of her presence.

Claire and Steve successfully power up a cargo transport plane at the island's military airfield to escape the inferno. However, Alfred overrides the aircraft via autopilot, redirecting the plane toward Umbrella's Antarctic Research Facility and releasing an active Tyrant (T-078) inside the cargo bay. Claire narrowly ejects the creature by triggering the hydraulic catapult lever to knock the Tyrant out of the open cargo door into the ocean just before crash-landing in the Antarctic snow.

Alexia's Awakening and Chris's Arrival

Inside the frozen Antarctic base, Claire and Steve confront the horrific truth of the Ashford legacy: fifteen years earlier, Alfred and Alexia experimented on their own father, Alexander Ashford, by injecting him with the prototype virus and mutating him into the chained creature Nosferatu. Claire defeats Nosferatu on the icy helipad, while Steve guns down Alfred when he attempts to ambush them. Mortally wounded, Alfred crawls to the secret cryogenic chamber and witnesses the awakening of the true Alexia Ashford, who has completed her 15-year stasis fully bonded with the T-Veronica Virus.

Simultaneously, Chris Redfield reaches Rockfort Island after receiving a distress message routed by Leon. Searching the devastated island, Chris encounters Rodrigo (who passes him Claire's lighter before succumbing to injuries from the giant Gulp Worm) and faces off against Albert Wesker, alive and armed with superhuman speed and strength from a prototype virus. Upon learning Claire has been taken to Antarctica, Chris commandeers an armed Harrier jet and flies south.

Steve's Sacrifice, the Fall of Alexia, and the Escape

In the Antarctic facility, Alexia captures Steve and injects him with an unfiltered strain of the T-Veronica Virus, causing him to mutate into a colossal green-skinned axe-wielding behemoth. When the creature corners Claire, Alexia attacks with giant tentacles; driven by his love for Claire, Steve regains his humanity and severs the tentacles to shield her, suffering mortal wounds in the process. Reverting to his human form in Claire's arms, Steve confesses his love ("I love you, Claire...") and passes away.

Chris rescues Claire and initiates the facility's emergency self-destruct countdown. Alexia blocks their path by mutating into a massive insectoid queen, but Chris annihilates her with the Linear Launcher particle beam weapon. Wesker takes advantage of the chaos to secure Steve's body (which still contains the pure T-Veronica strain) and flees after a brief confrontation with Chris. Chris and Claire board the Harrier jet and escape together as the Antarctic base detonates into oblivion.
