Weapons

Every weapon Harry finds on his way through town, from the kitchen knife to the Flauros, with what each one is actually good for.

Melee

Kitchen Knife

Harry's first weapon, and honestly his worst — quick swings that barely dent tougher enemies. Use it to save ammo on the weakest things you meet and switch to a gun the moment more than one enemy shows up.

Location
Coffee shop, right after the opening cutscene
Features
  • Fast, silent, and free — no ammo to manage
  • Fine against a single Grey Child or Mumbler
  • Weak against anything with more than a sliver of health
  • Puts you in melee range, which is the worst place to be against a group

Handguns

Handgun

Your main tool for most of the game. Aim for the head when you can — it's the only way to reliably one- or two-shot the weaker enemies instead of feeding them a whole clip.

Location
Cybil Bennett gives it to you in the coffee shop
Features
  • Handgun Bullets
  • Good range, lets you fight without closing the distance
  • Ammo is fairly common early on
  • Takes several hits to put down a Nurse or Mumbler
  • Doesn't stagger the tougher regulars

Shotguns

Shotgun

Once you have it, the Shotgun becomes the answer to almost anything that gets close. Save your shells for rooms with multiple enemies or for boss fights where you can't afford to miss.

Location
Midwich Elementary School, 2F men's restroom (Otherworld)
Features
  • Shotgun Shells
  • Devastating at close range — usually a one-shot kill
  • Best answer to Grey Children mobs and Romper packs
  • Nearly useless past a few feet
  • Ammo is scarce, save it for tight corners and bosses

Rifles

Hunting Rifle

A precision weapon that rewards keeping your distance. Hold onto it for open areas and for bosses that give you room to aim instead of the mansion-style close corridors.

Location
Central Silent Hill, Shopping Mall (found during the Otherworld boss fight)
Features
  • Rifle Bullets
  • Long range and high damage per shot
  • The best tool against flying enemies like Air Screamers
  • Slow to line up in tight indoor spaces
  • Ammo is the rarest of the three gun types

Special

Flauros

Cult Relic

An ornate blade tied to the Order's rituals rather than a conventional weapon. It hits far harder than the Kitchen Knife and becomes Harry's best melee option for the rest of the game.

Location
Balkan Church, on the altar (given during the story)
Features
  • Massive melee damage — kills most regulars in one or two hits
  • No ammo required
  • Still a melee weapon — you're in the enemy's reach to use it
  • Slow recovery between swings
