Secrets

All six endings and what actually decides them, plus the hidden weapons the game never tells you about.

Leave

Story Ending

The ending that leans hardest into James actually working through his guilt instead of running from it or hiding behind Maria. Generally considered the "canon-leaning" outcome.

Unlock Condition
Keep James's health mostly in the green throughout the playthrough, read Mary's letter and look at her photo several times, keep some distance from Maria instead of doting on her, and listen to Mary's full message at the very end instead of walking away.
Rewards
  • The most complete resolution to James and Mary's story

Maria

Story Ending

The mirror image of Leave — James latches onto Maria as a stand-in for Mary instead of confronting what actually happened. Closes on a deliberately uneasy note rather than a happy one.

Unlock Condition
Avoid Mary's letter and photo, stay close to Maria and protect her from enemies whenever she's with you, and skip listening to Mary's final message.
Rewards
  • James leaves town with Maria instead of alone

In Water

Story Ending

Triggered by playing James as someone who's stopped caring whether he survives, not just someone who's guilty. The bleakest reading of his arc — approach conditions can be finicky, so treat this as a guideline rather than an exact recipe.

Unlock Condition
Let James's health sit in critical condition for extended stretches without healing, and examine several of the game's more self-destructive item descriptions along the way.
Rewards
  • The darkest of the three main story endings

Rebirth

New Game+ Ending

A New Game+ exclusive ending built around a scavenger hunt of easy-to-miss items. Worth chasing once you already know the game's layout well, on a replay rather than a first playthrough.

Unlock Condition
Complete the game once first. On a subsequent playthrough, track down a specific set of hidden items scattered through the game and bring all of them to the final room instead of following the normal ending script.
Rewards
  • An alternate final-room sequence exclusive to New Game+
  • Only accessible after finishing the game at least once

Dog

Joke Ending

Reveals that a dog has secretly been behind Silent Hill's events the whole time — pure comic relief, and one of the most beloved easter eggs in the entire franchise.

Unlock Condition
Find and open a hidden switch/room tied to a maintenance closet, generally on a New Game+ save.
Rewards
  • A tongue-in-cheek non-canon ending
  • One of the series' most quoted jokes

UFO

Joke Ending

Silent Hill 2's detour into full self-aware absurdity — expect flying saucers rather than answers. Like the Dog ending, it's built for players revisiting a completed save, not a first run.

Unlock Condition
Collect a specific set of hidden items across one or more playthroughs and use them together late in the game.
Rewards
  • A sci-fi non-canon ending
  • Bonus content on a completed save

The Chainsaw

Weapon Unlock

A devastating, ammo-free melee weapon that replaces the humble Wooden Plank on any playthrough after your first clear — a huge quality-of-life upgrade for a New Game+ run.

Unlock Condition
Complete the game once, on any ending, then start a new save.
Rewards
  • Chainsaw added to James's inventory, found where the Wooden Plank used to be
