Chronology, mitochondrial evolution origins, key characters, and the M.I.S.T. investigation background.

The Manhattan Incident (1997) & Eve's Origin

On Christmas Eve 1997 in New York City, during an opera performance at Carnegie Hall, actress Melissa Pearce underwent a violent cellular awakening when her mitochondria mutated, transforming her into the entity known as Eve. Her awakening caused hundreds of audience members in the theater to spontaneously combust into flames.

Rookie NYPD officer Aya Brea discovered that her own mitochondria had awakened in response, granting her superhuman biological powers (Parasite Energy) and complete immunity to Eve's influence. Over seven harrowing days across Central Park, the American Museum of Natural History, and the Hudson River, Aya vanquished Eve and the gestating Ultimate Being, saving mankind from biological extinction.

Formation of M.I.S.T. & the Akropolis Tower Outbreak (2000)

In the aftermath of the New York disaster, the United States government and the FBI secretly formed M.I.S.T. (Mitochondrial Investigation and Suppression Team), an elite tactical unit dedicated to tracking down and eradicating Neo-Mitochondrial Creatures (NMCs). Aya resigned from the NYPD to join M.I.S.T. as a field operative based in Los Angeles, working alongside senior agent Rupert Broderick, technical specialist Pierce Carradine, and weapons armorer Jodie Bouquet.

On September 4, 2000, an outbreak of NMCs strikes the high-rise Akropolis Tower in downtown Los Angeles, wiping out the local S.W.A.T. detachment. During the raid, Aya uncovers that these creatures are not natural mutations, but genetically engineered Artificial Neo-Mitochondrial Creatures (ANMCs) led by an enigmatic cybernetic assassin known as No.9.

The Mystery of Dryfield & Kyle Madigan

Evidence retrieved from Akropolis Tower points Aya toward Dryfield, a sun-baked mining outpost in the Mojave Desert of Nevada. Upon arrival, she finds the settlement abandoned and overrun by lethal new mutant strains.

In Dryfield, Aya makes contact with the town's lone surviving resident, veteran gunsmith Gary Douglas (and his tracking hound Flint), alongside Kyle Madigan, a mysterious private investigator claiming to seek a hidden military facility. Together, they fend off mutant assaults and repel No.9, discovering an underground passageway inside an abandoned mine shaft.

The Shelter, Neo Ark & Project Neo-Mitochondria

Beneath the Nevada desert lies The Shelter, a colossal, high-tech subterranean military and genetics complex. A covert rogue faction within government ranks established the Neo-Mitochondria Project with the goal of forcibly replacing humanity with an engineered mitochondrial master race.

At the heart of the complex lies Neo Ark, an artificial subterranean biosphere simulating diverse biomes to breed and stress-test ANMCs. Aya makes the shocking discovery that the creatures were engineered using her own cloned genetic material, culminating in the birth of Eve, a cloned young girl engineered to host ultimate mitochondrial authority.

The Ultimate ANMC & Eve's Salvation

As military forces stage a surface intervention and elite biomechanical Golem shock troops are deployed to sanitize the facility, Aya pushes deep into the reactor levels. After rescuing her trapped comrades and shutting down Neo Ark's power grid, Aya destroys the colossal Ultimate ANMC within the core incubation cradle.

Grief-stricken and manipulated by lingering mitochondrial commands, young Eve undergoes a drastic transformation into a radiant winged deity. Following a ferocious battle atop the gantry bridge, Aya purifies Eve's mitochondrial core without ending her life. With The Shelter destroyed and the truth officially classified, Aya adopts young Eve as her sister, stepping forward into a peaceful future beyond the genetic nightmare.
